Claire Hart: From the Drawing Board to Worksheet Design: Creating a Course
Personalisation, tailor-made courses and the negotiated syllabus: these are all terms which are bandied around when people talk about course design in ELT, but you may find yourself asking what they mean in reality and how we, as teachers, can reap the benefits they promise. This session will begin by demystifying these terms and examining different approaches to what I would like to call student-centred course design with some practical examples from my teaching experience and the opportunity for participants to comment on and discuss these case studies.
In the second half of the workshop we will look at translating these course designs into lesson ideas and worksheets you can use in class. At this stage, I'll share some tips that I've learned while creating professional-looking worksheets for my blog and for publishers, which can help you look like more of a pro too.
Biographical info: Claire Hart currently delivers in-company business English and ESP courses in Ulm and Neu-Ulm, working in a range of companies from freight forwarders to automobile component manufacturers and baking product suppliers. Claire began teaching EFL eight years ago after graduating from the University of Cambridge with a BA (Hons) in History and then completing an MA in Museum Studies. As much as she loves history and museums, English language teaching proved to be her true passion and she is now a keen advocate of professional development for business English and ESP teachers. In her role as IATEFL BESIG Web and Online Team Coordinator, Claire also organises online professional development opportunities that draw in participants from all over the world. Claire´s other love is ELT materials development and she shares lesson plans and ideas on her Business English Lesson Plans blog: www.businessenglishlessonplans.wordpress.com.

Ian Badger: Teaching Communication Skills in Today's Business World
We will look at four main barriers to clear business communication in English, and how working with authentic listening materials can help to overcome them. The main barriers can be identified as: unfamiliar native and non-native accents, jargon and idiomatic language, different cultural practices, and new (and old) technologies. We will also identify some other familiar obstacles!
With specific attention to the main barriers, I will analyse key features of authentic recordings and give practical tips on how to use these to develop strategies to help students understand and be understood in their everyday working lives. We will look at recordings that can be used to help learners with communication skills such as short presentations, conference calls and voicemails. Finally, we will discuss how authentic recordings can be used to raise learners’ awareness of how they might be able to adapt their own language to be understood more clearly in the global workplace.
Join us afterwards for a networking hour!
