The afternoon will be split into 2 topics as follows:
‘I Speak English, I Learned it From a Book…’
For many of us, learning a language involved just that, learning from a book. Of course, books still play an important role in language study, (ask any publisher!) but modern methodology is placing increasing emphasis on modes of study more closely linked with the activities familiar to us in everyday life – activities such as surfing the web, communicating online and watching and discussing television and DVDs. One benefit of using such materials is the ‘authentic’ and up to date nature of such resources and the language contained in them. A downside of using authentic material though is the sheer amount of work involved on the teacher’s part in selecting and exploiting it. Until now that is… This talk will look at ways of easily using authentic material in class, and will be illustrated with material from the award winning new Pearson course developed in association with the BBC – Speak Out.
It’s Everyone’s Business
Teaching Business English commonly brings to mind lessons on boardroom negotiations, making presentations and discussing the stock market. For many learners, these topics are exactly what they need, but there are others whose needs are rather different. These people don’t deal with the board room or negotiate deals, but still need English in the working environment to interact with colleagues and clients at home and abroad. This session will consider the characteristics and requirements of both groups, and look at how we can respond appropriately in terms of approaches, activities and materials. The session will be illustrated with material taken from the Pearson courses Market Leader 3rd Edition and Lifestyle.
Sekt Social
Pearsons have kindly invited us to enjoy some Sekt, some snacks and some social chit-chat after the workshops. The idea is to stay on after the workshop (if you wish) and share a sekt and some snacks.
