Elephants in the Classroom - a Problem of Hedging
Hedge is defined by the Cambridge Dictionary as ‘a way of protecting, controlling, or limiting something’. In business, we are used to hedging bets and investments, using tools in order to minimise risk. In much the same way, we adopt linguistic tools and techniques when we speak, to avoid confronting a problem, a difficult question, or a controversial issue. But – like the British who hate to make a fuss, and the Germans so often accused of being too direct – the extent to which we use them can get us into unexpected scrapes. Take them to an extreme, and we’re talking potential disaster.
In this seminar, we will look at the pitfalls of hedging in the English language and examine its effects on cross-cultural negotiations. We’ll identify real-life examples and share some ideas about how to bring this topic to the classroom, so as to raise our students’ awareness not only of the language they use but of how they (might) use it.
Go It Alone: The Secrets of the LA Teacher
This session looks at principles and ideas for teaching students who want to take on more responsibility for their own language learning. How to organise and store vocabulary, how to deal with grammar, and how to make everything more ‘real’ - the resources we have at our fingertips make the autonomous language learner’s life so simple.
During the workshop, we will explore the resources available to teachers to guide their students through own study, how to maximise exposure to L2 in an L1 environment and make sure we give the students the language they really need.
